Ok, I know you have no doubt heard this one many times over the years. “Recycling Is Good”. Perhaps this is something you already do in your life. (Awesome!) And there are so many things now days that you can do your part with for recycling. Glass, Paper, etc. I wonder if you may be like me… Heard for a while about plastic sitting in a landfill for decades and the importance of doing recycling with plastic bottles. However, there are far worse things than just the fact they sit in your local landfill for many years. Once you know the real impact of plastics on our planet, you may just start looking at plastic recycling in a much more serious light.
I should mention here that when it comes to the subject of plastic, talking about the evil of plastics for a long time has not exactly been very popular to large corporations who for many years saved big money using plastics for containers to package their products. Plastic can be very cheap and is still a top choice by manufactures.
I can also say that in my own company we are using many different plastic bottles for our natural products. Yes, I am scratching my head trying to come up with a final solution for this problem and hope to get away from plastics all together in my company ASAP. It is a little unnerving to tell our customers that we make all natural products and then at the same time hand them a plastic bottle. As I write this article, I begin to become angry at myself for not already solving this problem once and for all… Yes, we do have a recycling program for customers to bring in their empty bottles to our stores for credit but the real solution will be much better if we can finally nix the plastic bottle usage entirely. Stay tuned, I’m working on it!
Now back to the purpose of this article which is to show you some facts about plastic bottles and how they really have a bad impact on our planet…
Recycling plastic bottles might not have been your number one priority (and for most people it has not been) but I think that once you know the numbers, the facts might just raise your eyebrows! I mentioned in the beginning that plastic bottles sit in a landfill for decades. Well, that was a big under exaggeration. The real estimated figures are up to 700 years. YES, I SAID SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS! That figure is enough to boggle the mind. (At least it boggles my mind!)
And yet another figure that is hard to imagine is that plastics take about 20 percent of the total volume in a landfill. This is because of their low bulk density. So not only do we have something that takes many hundreds of years to decompose, we have around 20% of the entire amount of garbage sitting around in a landfill being represented by plastic. Not sure about you but stopping and thinking about this should make both your eyebrows raise up real big!
Also, recycling plastic bottles saves about 60% the energy needed to manufacture new bottles! It is also interesting that every single piece of plastic made in the United States alone reduces the reserve supply of petroleum and makes the USA more dependent on foreign oil.
So the above facts alone should push anyone into seriously thinking about solving this program and at the very least start recycling plastic bottles in every way possible. Let’s take a good look at some other reasons for recycling plastic;
Recycling plastic bottles conserves energy that would have been used for new production and creates jobs. Just for one example, the state of North Carolina has over 14,000 jobs that are employed in the recycling industry.
Plastic bottles can actually be recycled right back into plastic bottles again, or can even be a different product entirely such as other kinds of containers, lumber, or even carpet and clothing. Interesting thought; take back all plastic sitting in our landfills and let companies recycle them into new products, saving the companies much money over new materials. (Just a thought)
So is recycling plastic bottles more important than recycling other materials? Of course the correct answer is that anything that can be recycled should be. However, consider the fact that energy savings are huge! Recycling plastic bottles uses 76% less energy, paper uses 45% less, and glass uses 21% less. So from the standpoint of bang for the buck perhaps recycling bottles is at least at the top of the list!
If all of the above has not yet got you thinking harder about recycling plastic bottles then consider this… In many cases you can actually make a little extra money from recycling. Plastic bottles, plastic soda bottles, shampoo bottles, (and many bath and body product bottles for that matter) including milk jugs can bring some income from many recycling centers around the country. There are many other items like plastic grocery bags that might not be accepted by the free curbside recycling programs, but there are other recycling centers that may purchase your plastics.
Recycling plastic bottles is not the only answer. Perhaps another solution is to just flat cut down on the usage of any products in plastic. Yes, I know that is easier said than done. However, the point I should really make here is that every time you purchase anything that is in a plastic bottle, think about what your going to do with it when it is empty!
In relation to plastic water bottles, using a bottled water delivery service that sanitizes bottles and then recycles them might be a better alternative for you and the environment. In any case just think about what you can do. Recycling, Skipping purchasing them all together, or some other alternative idea that can help the problem is good. Heck, anything that you do more than your doing now is a great contribution.
For those of you that are interested in how you can really make a different in keeping our planet green and helping out in the plastic bottle issue, the biggest impact you can make is not only doing your own part such as recycling, but perhaps a greater impact would be to educate others about plastic bottles and the impact they have on our planet. Remember, all it takes is a small seed planted in the minds of just a few others and they will also spread the word. Before you know it, your small efforts of educating others and promoting the importance if this issue will actually start to make a real difference!
While this article has been mainly about recycling plastic bottles, you should now be thinking much broader. There are so many other things that are made out of plastic which pose a serious problem to our planet. It is my hope that this article has sparked you into more thinking about the entire subject of plastic, recycling, possible solutions and most importantly spreading the work and getting others involved in becoming active in helping to make our planet green.
Spread The Word, Make A Difference! “Just Do It!!!”
P.S… If you have some thoughts on this issue you would like to add or perhaps your own solutions you would like to share then let me know! I would love to hear other ideas on recycling plastic bottles!
